Born in Italy, Pierre Cardin became a naturalized citizen of France. He moved to Paris in 1945, where he studied architecture. His first venture into fashion design was during his employment with the House of Paquin. He also worked with Elsa Schiaparelli. He headed Christian Dior's tailoring workshop from 1947 until he established his own fashion house in 1950. Cardin introduced his famed "bubble" dress in 1954, the same year he opened his first boutique.

As for runway jewelry pieces made for this fashion house, "Pierre Cardin's jewelry pieces made were designed in close connection with the garment. They accentuate a predominant element of the cut or draw attention to a detail," according to "Costume Jewelry for Haute Couture” by Florence Muller.

Cardin jewelry is mainly of the costume variety, although some designs were made in karat gold. Jewelry pieces sold to the masses were generally scaled-down versions of some of his runway designs or jewelry simply stylish for the period in which it was made.

Cardin died in 2020 at the age of 98.
